Our History
The Church that Oranges Built
Almost eighty-five years ago the Methodists in this area worshiped at the Ocklawaha Baptist Church. Picture it, a small Baptist Church bordering on Dixie Highway, today known as Cemetary Road, with a number of religious people gathering to praise God. (This is the present day First Baptist Church of Ocklawaha).
At that time a Methodist lady by the name of Josie Clark discovered there were other Methodist in the congregation. That was the spark that urged her to be instrumental in the establishment of the Methodist Church here in Ocklawaha. According to elder members of our church, the Methodist met in the Baptist Church every other Sunday when the Baptists weren't using it. This was when Ocklawaha and Howey (another area near here at the time) were added to the Lady Lake Circuit with Pastor C.F. Starnes officiating. He was pastor between 1922-1923. He was the pastor of the Lady Lake church and would come here to officiate on those Sundays.
Josie Clark felt a need for a Methodist Sunday School and was quick to take on the task of finding a place to meet. She received permission to use the little wooden schoohouse, which was located on the corner where the Dan Fort house was on an angle from the Baptist Church across the Dixie Highway. (The wooden schoolhouse no longer exists.) Jose got her dream; and, the Methodist Sunday School met at 3 PM on Sundays. Josie became the very first Sunday School teacher.
Because of differences in doctrines of the Baptist Church and Methodist Church, the Methodists were later asked to worship elsewhere; and, thus; left the Baptist Church to find another place to worship. This did not stop the desire to have a place of worship. With God's guidance and Josie Clark's determination to have a place to worship, Josie jumped to the cause and in December 1923 the Methodists received permission to use the old wooden schoolhouse as a place of worship. Now the Methodists would be worshiping on Sunday in the same building as the Sunday School class.
